The community committed to economic and social rights
Poverty and the increase in socio-economic inequalities, the vulnerability of health and education systems, the privatization of care and services, the housing crisis, hunger, homelessness reflect the deleterious effects of economic and social rights violations in Quebec and in Canada. This situation increases our society’s vulnerability to crises, as we have seen with the Covid-19 pandemic and as we will experience more and more with the climate crisis. It testifies the failure of the dominant human rights paradigm to ensure the protection of economic and social rights, which results in a deficit of accountability of our governments and in a denial of justice for the people who suffer from the effects of these violations. These phenomena are at risk of being exacerbated if the governments and the judges persist in ignoring economic and social rights.
The Community for Research-Action on Economic and Social Rights (COMRADES) brings together more than 15 co-researchers, students, collaborators from Quebec, Canada and France as well as 8 partners from institutional, civil society and the clinical practice of law environment. The purpose of this partnership is to promote economic and social rights as a legal response to exclusion and unequal social relations in human rights practices.

The members of COMRADES
The co-researchers, collaborators and students come from the law faculties of Laval, McGill, UQÀM, UdeM, UOttawa, UBC, Aix-Marseille University and from the civil society. The partners are diverse. They bring together the Ligue des droits et libertés and the Ligue des droits et libertés section de Québec, the Clinique juridique du Mile-End, the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse, the Protecteur du citoyen, the Clinique internationale de défense des droits humains de l’UQÀM, the Front commun des personnes assistées sociales du Québec (FCPASQ), the Groupe de recherche et de formation sur la pauvreté du Québec (GRFPQ) and the Social Rights Advocacy Centre.
